Of course, withdraw to the 1967 borders would mean that virtually every single landmark of historic and religious significance, would fall under PLO/Hamas control. The indefensible 67 lines would put Israel's international airport, and virtually every major Israeli population center in mortar range. The country would be eight miles wide and could be cut in two within hours.

The Economics of Iron Dome:

There has been much discussion about the economics of Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system. Some "experts" point out that each Iron Dome missile costs far more to manufacture than Hamas' cheep rockets, the Qassam and the Grad, and of course they are right.

But they fail to grasp a number of issues that explains Israel having green-lighted the Iron Dome system in the first place. You can say many things about the Israelis, but 'stupid' is not one of them:
1) Hamas rockets are in fact cheep, perhaps about a thousand dollars each on the high end, but they or their components are almost all smuggled into Gaza from Iran, from many miles away and through many obstacles, which cost quite a bit of money WELL beyond its manufacturing cost, while Israel's Iron Dome is produced domestically.
2) Iron Dome does not target ALL missiles shot at Israel. Its radar is connected to a computer that instantly calculates the trajectory of each missile fired and only engages those missiles on a trajectory to hit population centers. Those calculated to hit open fields are not engaged. Thus, Hamas fires about 10 rockets, mostly poorly aimed, and only about one rocket in ten needs to be engaged... therefore Hamas is firing around ten missiles to every single missile that Israel is firing to protect its population centers. Israel also saves money by avoiding having to repair damage that otherwise would have been caused by missile impacts in built-up areas, each impact could easily cause over $100,000 in damage. In reality, with that scale in mind, Hamas will be spending about the same or even more than Israel... mathematically speaking in terms costs/savings.
But here is the kicker:
3) In addition to all of that, and perhaps most importantly from an economic perspective, Israel will very quickly be in a position to export (as it always does) the Iron Dome technology to friendly foreign countries that require the same kind of protection, such as South Korea and India. These lucrative exports could ultimately pay for all of Israel's Iron Dome expenses, and will ultimately turn a profit, in addition to creating many jobs in Israel. Over time, Israel will actually make money from all of this, whereas Hamas will simply drain (as usual) the meager resources of the people of Gaza in a fruitless hate campaign (while hiding behind civilians) consisting of bombarding open fields, and getting pounded in return.

Intelligence, or basic morality are not something Hamas is known for, and these missile campaigns will rapidly become a losing proposition for them. In fact, they already have, by providing Israel with the opportunity to present the world with a truly marketable technological successes story, better than any Israeli sales pitch possibly could have. A real game-changer.

4) With far greater protection in hand (however imperfect), the pressure on Israel to mount a large military campaign in Gaza is reduced, since the Israeli government will not feel as compelled to mount a massive incursion in the absence of Israeli casualties. That alone could save many millions of dollars.

All in all, the Iron Dome is a winner from an economic perspective, far from the economic drain that cynics have portrayed it to be. And the fact that it will save lives, is of course, the ultimate justification.

Iron Dome Kills First Hamas Missile

Israel's new anti-missile system was put to a real test for the first time moments ago and destroyed a Grad missile fired by Hamas terrorists from Gaza, aimed a civilians in southern Israel. This is an historic moment in anti-missile warfare, and marks the first time anywhere that a system specifically designed to destroy incoming missiles intercepts a missile in a real incident. Earlier last month, Israel's "Windbreaker" system intercepted an anti-tank missile shot at an Israeli tank by Gaza terrorists, also marking a first. These incidents mark the first real steps in what is ultimately meant as a complete neutralization of missile threats against Israel, and eventually to protect civilized people everywhere.

UPDATE: Unprecedented success as Iron Dome continues to knock multiple missile launches out of the sky. The system is designed to cover specific geographic areas, such as populated areas, the radar is linked to a computer that instantly calculates missile trajectories and decides whether to intercept or not based on where they are headed. Missiles headed towards open spaces are ignored, and only those representing a treat to populated areas are engaged, thus, although not a total solution, greatly lowering the risk of casualties on the Israeli side. Unfortunately, since the terrorists cowardly fire and hide behind civilians, Israeli counter actions will likely involve civilian casualties on the terrorists side.

Obama Attacks A Country That Represented No Threat to the US

OK, lets review the moment. Unlike Bush, Nobel peace prize winner Barack Obama attacked a Muslim Arab country without even seeking congressional approval. Obama attacked an oil producing country (no blood for oil?) that represented no threat to the United States in any real way, ZERO. He attacked a dictator who by any standard of measurement was/is far less dangerous than Saddam Hussein was, by a factor of at least 100. He attacked a country and then headed off to what amounted to nothing more than tourist jaunt to Brazil. But hey, forget the US congress, the elected representatives of the American people, at least he sought the approval of the Arab League.

Of course, we support the mission and wish US forces, and wild-man Obama's policy of going all Bushy on Gaddafi. We hope for nothing but success in toppling another crazy Arab dictator. But the blatant hypocrisy is...ah... stunning to say the least.

History: Israel's Trophy "Windbreaker" System Intercepts Incoming Missile In Real Incident

This is likely to be a historic game-changer in tank warfare. Yesterday, an Israeli tank was attacked with an RPG by a Palestinian terrorist along the Gaza border. The tank, a Merk 4, was equipped with a new Trophy "Windbreaker" anti-missile protective shield. The system automatically detected the missile launched against the tank, and automatically launched a countermeasure that destroyed the incoming missile before it could reach its target. The tank and the crew were undamaged and the crew was momentarily unaware of what had happened since the entire exchange was automatic and instantaneous. The Trophy system identified where the missile was fired from allowing the Israelis to return fire, killing the terrorist. This is the first recorded incident ever of a tank destroying a missile launched at it. The Trophy is designed to take out multiple missile threats. A more advanced version currently in development will also destroy kinetic projectile threats such as incoming tank rounds, changing tank warfare as we know it. Israel is currently sharing the technology with the United States Military.

Theoretically at least, if the Trophy program is as successful as envisioned, Israeli heavy armor could be rolling through downtown Damascus in a matter of hours if given the order, with little to stop them. NATO tanks would be in a position to halt any Russian assault on Western Europe with much greater ease, US armor in asymmetric combat theaters such as Iraq or Afghanistan would be far less vulnerable to hit and run attacks. Of course, counter-measures to the counter measures could be developed, but those too could be counted over time as well. A real game-changer.

Most people who are intimately knowledgeable about the details of the case have already weighed in in favor of clemency. But the administration is holding him hostage for some kind of payback. Certainly Pollard deserved punishment, but as the decades pass, his ordeal has gone well beyond punishment and into the realm of petty revenge and cruelty.
