Looking for the Will Beyond the Battlefield

I continue to marvel at the quantity and quality of material emanating from our side of the political aisle on a daily basis, especially in comparison to the other side of the aisle that seem empty of any intellectual idea other than “Bush is bad.” Ben Stein delivered a strong, thought provoking piece in the paper of shame yesterday. An absolute must read (no, don't buy the paper read it here); a small sample:

"…Who’s fighting for us in the fight of our lives? Brave, idealistic Southerners. Hispanics from New Mexico. Rural men and women from upstate New York. Small-town boys and girls from the Midwest. Do the children of the powers on Wall Street resign to go off and fight? Fight for the system that made them rich? Fight for the way of life that made them princes? Surely, you jest.
And that’s the essence. The other side considers it a privilege to fight and die for its beliefs. Those on the other side cannot wait to line up to blow themselves up for their vision of heaven. On our side, it’s: “Let the other poor sap do it. I’ve got to make money.” How can we fight this fight with the brightest and best educated rushing off and working night and day to do private equity deals and derivatives trading? How can we fight this fight with the ruling class absent by its own sweet leave?
I keep thinking, again, that if Israel, with its back to the sea, cannot muster the will to fight in a big way, then the fat, faraway U.S.A. will never be able to do it. I keep saying this and it terrifies me.
We’re in a war with people who want to kill us all and wreck our civilization. They’re taking it very seriously. We, on the other hand, are worrying about leveraged buyouts and special dividends and how much junk debt the newly formed private entity can support before we sell it to the ultimate sucker, the public shareholder.
We’re worrying whether Hollywood will forgive Mel Gibson and what the next move is for big homes in East Hampton. We’re rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The terrorists are the iceberg."

August 22nd: Waiting for the 12th Imam?

The Neocon is skeptical (to say the least) of the various doomsday and Armageddon scenarios circulating on the internet. Indeed, the date does coincide with an important day of reckoning for many Shiite Muslims who believe that only following a massive conflagration will the world finally witness the return of the 12th Imam, which will usher in an era of world peace under Islamic law. Radical Shiites such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamadinajad are known to possess mystical beliefs in relation to the 12th Imam and the concern is that he may feel compelled to initiate an action on that important date on the Shiite calendar that will, in his mind, help to bring about the great conflagration (a number of experts suspect that is why he chose August 22nd as the day he will deliver his answer to the UN and its demands for a halt to the Iranian nuclear program). Hopefully, the various scholars and bloggers will be proven overly concerned.

Thuggery & Trickery: How Islamic Terrorists Manipulate the Media

In this excellent piece by Joel Mowbray of Real Clear Politics, he lays out the case as to why there is often pro-terrorist bias in much of the main-stream-media (MSM). One point however that Mowbray failed to mention and I believe is possibly a crucial component to this issue is that Arab media themselves, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States pay a premium for Arab-Israeli conflict material generated by MSM and expect a tilt that will be acceptable to their audience. This creates an economic incentive for bias which is almost never mentioned, in addition to all of the other well argued reasons laid out in Mowbray’s piece.

In an interesting development, many Israeli reservist soldiers have signed on to a petition criticizing the indecisiveness and vacillation of their government. This is consistent with the Neocon’s assertions early on in the Lebanon conflict that the IDF rank and file were ready to take risks and do their duty no matter what the cost, while the IDF senior leadership and political leadership was paralyzed by indecision as the highly motivated troops waited like sitting ducks for instructions that never came.

Fox News Under Pressure to Change Coverage?

The Neocon suspects that the kidnapping of Fox News Journalist Steve Centanni and his Cameraman Olaf Wiig has to do with Islamo-Fascist efforts to bend Fox News Middle East coverage, and Fox’s coverage of the Global war with Islamo-Fascists in general, towards the type of relativists coverage currently offered by CNN and BBC, deemed more friendly to the Islamic cause. Fox News, whose coverage until now has been more pro-Western have been very careful in its handling of this difficult situation, rarely mentioning the subject except for intermittently publishing appeals from family members and respected Arab organizations with repeated mentions of how the kidnapping “hurts the Palestinian cause.” We hope that this terrorist-hostage episode does not mark the beginning of a reversal in Fox’s approach to coverage of the global struggle.

These Muslim leaders blame British policies in Iraq and Lebanon for radicalizing Muslims who may then take extreme actions. Wow!!! And these are the “moderate” Muslims! UPDATE: Schizophrenic Olmert Changes His Mind... Again!

As predicted in the previous post, it only took Schizophrenic Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert a few hours to change his mind... again, reversing course and now accepting the same UN cease-fire agreement that only a few hours ago he rejected. Olmert announced the initiation of a massive ground campaign only a few hours ago. As troops began moving in, Olmert suddenly announces his acceptance of a cease fire and tanks have been ordered to stop again. The Neocon believes that Olmert's bizarre and embarrasing behavior could mean that the offensive will be reinitiated in the coming hours as he changes his mind, yet again.

Update: Now Olmert says that despite his acceptance of a cease-fire, he wants troops to keep fighting for now. Stay tuned, Olmert will likely change his mind in the coming moments, we will keep you updated. The Israeli Governments inexcusable confusion continues. The offensive that has been on and off for the 4th time is now…. on again. At this rate, we would not be surprised if in the next few hours it will be…off again. IDF Shocked by Political Indecisiveness

This wishy-washy decision-making process cost the IDF lives, according to one senior officer. "A military force always needs to be on the offensive, pushing forward and keeping the enemy on its toes," he said. "When you sit still for too long, you turn into a target and you begin to get hit again and again."

That is what has been happening. Over the past 30 days of fighting Hizbullah, the army has lost 83 soldiers, 35 of them this week. "That is what happens when you sit still and don't move," the officer said. "The enemy fortifies its positions and gains the upper hand."

Bush: "Islamic Fascisim" is the Enemy and We are at War with Them

This is the first time that the Neocon recalls President Bush saying that we are at war with “Islamic Fascists”; this is good news for the sake of clarity. It’s not a “war on terror” or a struggle against misguided elements of the “Religion of Peace” (ROP). It’s a large and growing Islamic Fascist movment and it threatens the very foundation of the entire civilized world. Language is part of this war and clarity is one of the keys to victory: Islamic Fascism is the enemy. We have criticized the President for his failure in the past (for political reasons) to clearly identify the enemy and are glad to see the President in his own language has now recognized and publiclly confirmed this self evident truth. Furthermore, We hope that like Neville Chamberlin before them, many of our misguided friends on the "progressive" left will slowly come to understand and confront what is an obvious, clear and present danger to all of us, Liberal or Conservative.

As I was writing the last post, word came in that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has suddenly decided to put the planed and approved offensive on hold as its initial stages are already in motion. If true, this is one more graphic illustration of the confusion and indecisiveness that has plagued the Israeli leadership from the beginning of this conflict, and has been written about extensively by the Neocon Express. Israeli leaders are truly at this point a disappointment, as opposed to citizens and soldiers who are more than ready to do their duty and are being let down by a rudderless and confused leadership. First it was just an air war, then only “in and out” operations, and then only a narrow security zone, Bint Jubail was captured, and then not captured. Then an operation to the Litani River was on, and then was off, then on again by vote of the Security Cabinet, and now off again. Unless this is some kind of psychological warfare to keep the enemy off balance while a brilliant move is being conducted (which I doubt but would be happy if true), then this is turning into an unparalleled fiasco emanating from the political level.

So 11 young Arab men arrived in the US recently on Student Visas, and have failed to show up at their designated University. What’s the big concern? If profiling doesn’t make any sense, then the concern here should be roughly on the same level as if 11 young Norwegian students failed to show up. The fact that the FBI, Immigration, and every other anti-terrorist and homeland security agency have issued a cover-your-rear-end “NATION WIDE ALERT” serves to expose the fallacy of PC assertions that “profiling doesn’t make sense.” If it didn't, there would be little of the justifiable concern expressed in this case.

Inexcusable confusion continues to dominate the Israeli decision-making process. Only tomorrow will Israel’s Security Cabinet decide on a massive offensive with the necessary force to do the job. This is a decision that most experts believe should have been made weeks ago. Further indications of confusion can be found in the IDF Chief of Staff’s sudden decision to appoint a “personal representative” to the Northern Command. This is a strong signal of a lack of confidence in Major General Udi Adam, Israel’s current Northern Front Commander (in photo), and in the results achieved to this date. Let’s hope they get their act together. Of course, with success in the field, all this will be forgotten as a minor footnote.

Princeton Scholar Warns that Iran's Ahmadinejad may be Planning Cataclysmic Event...And Suggests a Date

World renowned expert on Islam Professor Bernard Lewis of Princeton University has stated in an article today in the Wall Street Journal that Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may be planning a cataclysmic event for August 22nd: "In Islam as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time -- Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined.…Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the US about nuclear development by Aug. 22, which this year corresponds to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to 'the farthest mosque,' usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind."
It may be difficult for those of us who are relatively secular, liberal (in the classic sense of the word) and modern, to grasp the mentality of the Islamo-fascist mind, but it would be a great mistake to underestimate, ridicule or ignore their publicly stated or hinted intentions.

Northern Clarity: Canadian PM Harper Emerging as a Clear Thinker and Straight Talker on Middle East Issue

Joining the ranks of Australian Prime Minister John Howard as a clear thinker and straight talker, Canada's new Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivered a strong message of support for Israel and rejected criticism his government had shifted Canada away from its traditional role as an "honest broker" (code for Israel bashing) between Israel and its adversaries. Paraphrasing on several occasions a statement by former British prime minister Winston Churchill, Harper said Canada would not remain neutral between a fellow democracy and a terrorist organization.

What we refuse to do is to be drawn into a moral equivalence between a pyromaniac and a fireman... if a terrorist organization crossed Canadian borders, kidnapped our soldiers and hurled missiles at our population centres, Canada would do the same as Israel, “fight back,” the prime minister said.

In this excellent article, 'A Horrible Truth,' coming to us from another smart Canadian, David Warren of the Ottawa Citizen, via Real Clear Politics, Warren makes a strong case for avoiding the trap of over-emphasizing the need to avoid collateral damage in asymmetrical warfare: a small sample: Even "just war" acknowledges that, as in medicine, real mercy can sometimes require ruthlessness. We have forgotten this in the West. If we want to save civilians, over the longer run, we must resolve to call the enemy's bluff. Show him by our actions that hiding behind baby carriages will not save him. For the enemy will only stop using "human shields" when they cease to serve his purposes.

Also brought to us by Real Clear Politics, is this killer article by one our great thinkers, Dennis Prager. The Left's Inability to Confront Evil. These point are strong, clear and in my view irrifutable. A small sample: "Since the 1960s, when liberalism became indistinguishable from the Left -- e.g., when New York Times positions became indistinguishable from those of The Nation -- liberals tended to attack opponents of evil far more than those who actually committed evil. The Left (around the world) was far more antagonistic to Ronald Reagan than to Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, and far more disturbed by anti-Communism than by Communism. So, too, today. For example, with few exceptions (the liberal columnist Thomas Friedman being one of the most notable) one only hears conservatives use the term "Islamo-fascism." Nearly the entire academic world that discusses the issue is far more concerned with the threat of "Islamophobia" than of Islamo-fascism. Liberal and left-wing anger is largely reserved for conservatives and especially conservative Christians, while analogous antipathy about Islamic groups with genocidal designs on Israel or America is largely to be found on the Right."

So after weeks of bombing, the legitimate Government of Lebanon has finally agreed to take control of South Lebanon and of its border region with Israel, something that should have been done years ago. The devil is in the detail; if this means that South Lebanon will be under the full and exclusive control of the legitimate Government of Lebanon and not a Proxy army of Iranian-backed Islamo-fascists, then progress towards a cease-fire may indeed be possible. This still leaves open the question of disarming the Islamo-fascists and returning the Israeli prisoners. Perhaps a few more weeks of stepped-up bombing will resolve that issue as well? The key for Israel and the West is that Hezbollah not be seen as gaining anything from the war that they initiated, and that the strategic balance be settled in favor of stability and peace, in short, in favor of Israel.

wake up call: the cost of indecisiveness

NEEDED: An Israeli Military Leader

Of course, it is always easy to criticize from the comfort of a desk, thousands of miles away from the front lines, but to me, a few things seem obvious and need to be expressed so here goes: That the state of Israel would tolerate over a full month of non-stop rocket fire on its cities, effectively chasing a third of its population into bomb shelters and paralyzing the entire economy with no end in sight is…well…simply stunning and unprecedented.

The IDF’s response to the enemy’s aggression has been anemic, unimaginative, discombobulated and ineffective (at least on the surface of things). The campaign began with a predictable air war that was not quickly followed up with a massive, sustained and aggressive ground operation (until recently only 3 Brigades committed). This gave the enemy the impression that Israel does not have the sufficient courage or will to sustain whatever casualties are necessary for victory, and also gave the enemy, sitting in their bunkers, time to adjust as the rockets keep coming. The fact that from the very beginning the Israeli government’s Security Cabinet gave the IDF mixed, micro-managed messages about the authorized extent of the operation only served to contribute to the confusion. Now I hear that the Litani River is no longer the stated objective, as was indicated only 48 hours ago. All of this is playing out in front of a US administration that undoubtedly expected that the valuable time extended would be put to better military use in degrading Hezbollah’s operational capabilities. Instead there seems to be an attitude of war on the cheap: 'Let’s go through the motions until an international force arrives.'

What we have here is a failure of leadership that goes through the offices of the IDF Chief of Staff (a career Air force Officer), the Defense Minister (a career Union Boss), and all the way up to the Prime Ministers office; all otherwise good men who seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is not a failure on the part of the Israeli public (90+% support) or the IDF rank and file who seem entirely ready to do their duty no matter what the cost.

From my humble and admittedly amateur observation post, it seems to me that the only measure at this point that actually counts is the number of rockets falling daily on Israeli civilian population centers. No matter how many press conferences or exciting visuals of F-16’s, artillery batteries and tough-looking soldiers with painted faces and cool helmets parading around, if they can’t stop the rocket fire on the civilian population centers then little has been achieved. What Israel needs is a leader, a real Military leader in the mold of Dayan, Sharon, Rabin, and a few others, who will rise from the ranks and display the nessisary ruthlessness to acheive what needs to be done to stop the rocket fire in spite of the confusion at the political level. Right now, that leader has not materialized. The good news is that it's not too late to turn things around
