Op-Ed of the Week: Mark Steyn: Demography is Everything
The Neocon marvals at the prolific work of writer Mark Steyn. This is the second week in a row that Steyn wins the Neocon Op-Ed of the week. Avoiding the usual chatter of the inside-baseball beltway crowd, Steyn focuses on the larger trends that will have real impact on the future. In this peice below, published in 'The Australian', Steyn delivers a real thought-provoking masterpeice. It's a little long for an internet blog posting, but well worth it:
MY interest in demography dates back to September 11, 2001, when a demographic group I hadn't hitherto given much thought managed to get my attention. I don't mean the, ah, unfortunate business with the planes and buildings and so forth, but the open cheering of the attacks by their co-religionists in Montreal, Yorkshire, Copenhagen and elsewhere. How many people knew there were fast-growing and culturally confident Muslim populations in Scandinavia?
Demography doesn't explain everything but it accounts for a good 90 per cent. The "who" is the best indicator of the what-where-when-and-why. Go on, pick a subject. Will Japan's economy return to the heady days of the 1980s when US businesses cowered in terror? Answer: No. Japan is exactly the same as it was in its heyday except for one fact: it stopped breeding and its population aged. Will China be the hyperpower of the 21st century? Answer: No. Its population will get old before it gets rich.
Check back with me in a century and we'll see who's right on that one. But here's one we know the answer to: Why is this newspaper published in the language of a tiny island on the other side of the earth? Why does Australia have an English Queen, English common law, English institutions? Because England was the first nation to conquer infant mortality.
By 1820 medical progress had so transformed British life that half the population was under the age of 15. Britain had the manpower to take, hold, settle and administer huge chunks of real estate around the planet. Had, say, China or Russia been first to overcome childhood mortality, the modern world would be very different.
What country today has half of its population under the age of 15? Italy has 14 per cent, the UK 18 per cent, Australia 20 per cent - and Saudi Arabia has 39 per cent, Pakistan 40 per cent and Yemen 47 per cent. Little Yemen, like little Britain 200 years ago, will send its surplus youth around the world - one way or another.
So, whether or not her remarks were "outrageous" (the Democrats' Lyn Allison), "insensitive" (the Greens' Rachel Siewert), "offensively discriminatory" (Sydney's Daily Telegraph) and "bigoted" (this newspaper), I salute Danna Vale. You don't have to agree with her argument that Australia's aborting itself out of recognition and that therefore Islam will inherit by default to think it's worth asking a couple of questions:
* Is abortion in society's interest?
* Can a society become more Muslim in its demographic character without also becoming more Muslim in its political and civil character?
The first one's easy: One can understand that 17-year-old Glenys working the late shift at Burger King and knocked up by some bloke who scrammed 10 minutes after conception may believe it's in her interest to exercise "a woman's right to choose", but the state has absolutely no interest in encouraging women in general to exercise that choice.
Quite the opposite: given that today's wee bairns are tomorrow's funders of otherwise unsustainable social programs, all responsible governments should be seriously natalist. The reason Europe, Russia and Japan are doomed boils down to a big lack of babies. Abortion isn't solely responsible for that but it's certainly part of the problem.
In attempting to refute Vale's argument, this newspaper praised the nation's maidenhood for lying back and thinking of Australia and getting the national fertility rate up from 1.73 births per woman in 2001 to 1.77, "well above rates in developed nations such as Italy, Spain, Japan, Germany and South Korea".
Well, pop the champagne corks! That's like saying Mark Latham's political prospects are better than Harold Holt's. The countries cited are going out of business. Seventeen European nations are now at what demographers call "lowest-low" fertility - 1.3 births per woman, the point at which you're so far down the death spiral you can't pull out.
In theory, those countries will find their population halving every 40 years or so. In practice, it will be quicker than that, as the savvier youngsters figure there's no point sticking around a country that's turned into one big undertaker's waiting room: not every pimply burger flipper is going to want to work himself into the ground to pay for new shuffleboard courts at the old folks' home.
In 2005, some 137 million babies were born around the globe. That 137 million is the maximum number of 20-year-olds who'll be around in 2025. There are no more, no other sources; that's it, barring the introduction of mass accelerated cloning (which is by no means an impossibility). Who that 137 million are will determine the character of our world.
The shape's already becoming clear. Take those Danish cartoons. Every internet blogger wants to take a stand on principle alongside plucky little Denmark. But there's only five million of them. Whereas there are 20 million Muslims in Europe - officially. That's the equivalent of the Danes plus the Irish plus the Belgians plus the Estonians.
You do the mathematics. If you want the reality of Europe in a nutshell, walk into a supermarket belonging to the French chain Carrefour. You'll be greeted by a notice in Arabic: "Dear Clients, We express solidarity with the Islamic and Egyptian community. Carrefour doesn't carry Danish products." It's strictly business: they have three Danish customers and a gazillion Muslim ones. Retail sales-wise, they know which way their bread's buttered and it isn't with Lurpak.
That's Vale's second point. If a society chooses to outsource its breeding, who your suppliers are is not unimportant. "I've heard those very silly remarks made about immigrants to this country since I was a child," says Allison.
"If it wasn't the Greeks, it was the Italians or it was the Vietnamese."
Those are races or nationalities. But Islam is a religion, and an explicitly political one - unlike the birthplace of your grandfather it's not something you leave behind in the old country. Indeed, for its adherents in the West, it becomes their principal expression - a Pan-Islamic identity that transcends borders.
Instead of a melting pot, there's conversion: A Scot can marry a Greek or a Botswanan, but when a Scot marries a Yemeni it's because the former has become a Muslim. In defiance of normal immigration patterns, the host country winds up assimilating with Islam: French municipal swimming baths introduce non-mixed bathing sessions; a Canadian Government report recommends the legalisation of polygamy; Seville removes King Ferdinand III as patron of the annual fiesta because he played too, um, prominent a role in taking back Spain from the Moors.
When the fastest-breeding demographic group on the planet is also the one most resistant to the pieties of the social-democratic state that's a profound challenge. Yes, yes, I know Islam is very varied, and Riyadh has a vibrant gay scene, and the Khartoum Feminist Publishing Collective now has so many members they've rented lavish new offices above the clitorectomy clinic. I don't claim to have all the answers, except when I'm being interviewed live on TV. But that's better than claiming, as most of Vale's disparagers do, that there aren't even any questions.
Where she goes wrong is in consigning the Lucky Country to the same trash can of history as Old Europe. For Australia, this is not hail and farewell - or, as the Romans put it, ave atque (Danna) vale. Japan is unicultural: a native population ageing and dying. Europe is bicultural: a fading elderly population yielding to a young surging Islam.
But Australia, like the US, is genuinely multicultural, at least in the sense that its immigration is not from a single overwhelming source. The remorseless transformation of Eutopia into Eurabia is already prompting the Dutch to abandon their country in record numbers, for Canada and New Zealand.
In the years ahead, North America and Australia will have the pick of European talent and a chance to learn the lessons of its self-extinction, as they apply to abortion and much else.
In the '70s and '80, Muslims had children - those self-detonating Islamists in London and Gaza and Bali are a literal baby boom - while westerners took all those silly books about overpopulation seriously. A people that won't multiply can't go forth or go anywhere. Those who do will shape the world we live in.

NEOCON QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"Islam makes very large claims for itself. In its art, there is a prejudice against representing the human form at all. The prohibition on picturing the prophet who was only another male mammal is apparently absolute. So is the prohibition on pork or alcohol or, in some Muslim societies, music or dancing. Very well then, let a good Muslim abstain rigorously from all these. But if he claims the right to make me abstain as well, he offers the clearest possible warning and proof of an aggressive intent. This uneasy coexistence is only an interlude, he seems to say. For the moment, all I can do is claim to possess absolute truth and demand absolute immunity from criticism. But in the future, you will do what I say and you will do it on pain of death."

Prostitution: Actors Busey and Zane Sell Out America in New Turkish Film
Actors Billy Zane and Gary Busey are apparently have having trouble finding acting jobs, so they agreed to prostitute themselves in a scurrilous anti-America, anti-Semitic Turkish film, Valley of the Wolves, that is all the rage now in Muslim Countries.
Billy Zane plays an American officer in Iraq who has no problem shooting up innocent people at a wedding party and dragging whoever survives to Abu Graib prison, where Gary Busey, playing a US Jewish doctor robs the prisoners of their internal organs to sell to rich people in New York, London, and of course…Tel Aviv. No riots in the West will occure and no embassies will be burned, but that these two actors would agree to participate in this type of America-hating trash is a big eye opener.

Forget Cartoons; New Gay Muslim Movie “In The Name of Allah” Set to Debut

HOLLYWWOD: If a few little Danish Cartoons caused the Muslim world to go BONKERS, imagine what this new film about Muslim Homosexuality will do. The subject matter is, needless to say, highly controversial in the Muslim world, but the title of the film; "IN THE NAME OF ALLAH" will surely provoke massive hysteria if recent history is any indication. It's going to be an interesting Spring.

STUNNING UPDATE: Saudi Ambassador in US Openly Lauds Terrorism Against Israelis

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States has called Palestinian terrorist attacks on Israelis "legitimate," the Associated Press reported. Prince Turki al-Faisal made the remarks on Monday in a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City. Saudi Arabia has long been helping to incite terrorism against Americans and Israelis. Last year, the country was caught supplying American mosques and Islamic centers with publications encouraging hatred of Christians, Jews and moderate Muslims.
The Saudi Ambassador distinguished between terrorism and suicide attacks carried out by Palestinian groups against Israel, saying the attacks against Israel were justified by groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad as "legitimate means of war..."

Latest Gallup Poll: Americans Strongly Support Israel
U.S. support for Israel has spiked in the wake of the terrorist group Hamas' takeover of the Palestinian Authority's (PA) parliament, a Gallup poll found. According to Gallup, 57 percent of Americans think the United States should give no aid to the PA while Hamas is in power. The poll found 59 percent of Americans are more likely to sympathize with Israel in its battle against Palestinian terrorism. Support for Israel was even higher – 66 percent – among Americans who say they follow international news "very closely."

So now Europe is being thrust right into the middle of the so-called war against Islamic fascism. Once threatened, it will either react with a newly acquired Churchillian maturity to protect its civilization, or cave, in hopes that even more Chamberlain-type appeasement will satisfy the Islamists. It should be a fascinating spring ahead.

Chevron Arrogance And Brown-Nosing At Saudi Conference
I know where I won't be filling up my next tank of gas: at my local Chevron station. It took a particular amount of Chutzpah on the part of Chevron Vice President Peter Robertson, who joined Al Gore in trashing America at the Jeddah Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia: “This notion of being energy independent is completely unreasonable,” Robertson said, mocking Bush and pandering to the largely Saudi audience.
“I don’t think anyone actually believes that the US can end its dependence on oil in the Middle East at all...Quite frankly, I think these comments (Bush's comments) reflect some misunderstanding of global energy supply." What a two-bit pandering brown-nose suck-up. Chevron is raking it in here in the US, and they send their boy Robertson over there to brown-nose at our expense. “Oil and gas are going to be the fundamental source of our energy for the rest of my life and, I’m confident, well beyond that,” he proclaimed. Thanks Chevron.

Stunning - Hamas to USA: "We Don't Need Your Satanic Money...We Will Liberate ALL of Palestine"

In a stunning, and somewhat refreshing interview in terms of its honesty, the Hamas leader made no mistake as to where the Palestinians are headed: End corruption, eliminate the "tourism of nudity" and use education to promote a culture of resistance. "Recognizing the state of the Israeli enemy is not on the table," he said. "Our program is to liberate Palestine, all of Palestine...
The Qassam Brigades will continue to increase in numbers, supplies and weapons...until the liberation is completed...We are entering (parliament) to eliminate any traces of Oslo," he said.
As disturbing as these words may be, it is refreshing that there is clarity in these matters. The phony pretenses are gone and the chits are on the table. The Palestinians have chosen their path; we will see where it leads them. Let their words be recorded for history and let them not complain later.

In Saudi, Gore Laments "unforgivable" U.S. 'Abuses' Against Arabs!
For some time now many have suspected that Al Gore has simply fallen off the deep end. Gore’s latest speech to the Jeddah Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia will serve to confirm these suspicions. What was at the top of his agenda in the country that produced over two thirds of the 9/11 hijackers? “Unforgivable US abuse of…Arabs!” Yep. Not terrorism bred by Islamic radicalism. No, no, no! It’s “unforgivable US abuse of Arabs.” Wow! You make the call.

The LA Times: THE GUTLESS OFFENDERS AND CARTOON HYPOCRITES-IN-CHEIF

by Si Frumkin
It was reported, somewhat apologetically, that the major U.S. newspapers who are always in the forefront of the ongoing battle for the freedom of the press, free uncensored expression and who fearlessly go into battle to expose the evil politicians, generals, big businessmen, polluters and war profiteers have chickened out. The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, Boston Globe and the rest of the media heroes decided not to print the 12 Danish cartoons that have caused all the recent problems worldwide.
This in itself isn’t much of a story. Those who follow these things know that this is not unusual. The media have a way of dealing with real danger that was evidenced when some of the biggies in print and TV media had made a deal with Saddam Hussein not to say bad things about him if he will allow their Baghdad bureaus remain open. There is also the pro-Palestinian bias that is motivated by Palestinian guns having been held to reporters’ heads, confiscation of film and demands – usually met - for the firing of those who report Palestinian brutality, savagery or phoniness of some the staged events.
The story is that the Los Angeles Times did print offensive cartoons, quite a few of them, certainly more than just a dozen, but they weren’t those offensive cartoons. They certainly were offensive but just as certainly the Times people knew that there would be no dire consequences – no one would be physically attacked, mobs wouldn’t set fire to the Times building and Times bureaus wouldn’t be closed in the faraway Middle East. The worst that could happen was that annoyed readers might cancel a few subscriptions and a few nasty letters would be written to the editor.
The Times could live with that. After all, in a city with no serious competitors where would these readers go? And furthermore, the cartoons were produced by Paul Conrad, a man with impeccable liberal credentials, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a truly talented artist, so who cares if a couple of rabbis and others express their disapproval.
Wait a minute, you say. The Times is better than that. The Times wouldn’t do this. Were they really and truly offensive? Maybe it is all in Frumkin’s mind? One man’s offensive is another man’s masterpiece, or something like that, you know.
OK, you may be right and I’ll let you judge for yourself. Here are just a few of them.
A Star of David formed of dead bodies – Palestinians murdered by Israel (9/20/82; a Star of David made of barbed wire encloses Palestinians (4/4/82); machine guns and automatic weapons form a Star of David (1/5/81); an Israeli soldier with a smoking gun in his hands stands on top of a pile of dead Palestinians, saying, “I’m willing to talk peace, but there aren’t any Palestinians to talk peace with”(4/27/88); an Israeli soldier firing at a dying Palestinian, a calendar below him with most days checked off and a caption, ”A Palestinian a day keeps the PLO away”; a monstrous Menachem Begin (he was the Israeli Prime Minister at the time) whose face is a nuclear cloud that is rising through a Star of David; the Israeli flag in which the Star of David in the center and the stripes above and below are represented by vertical lines counting off dead Palestinians (6/5/89); a bearded figure holding up a placard “Free Soviet Jews” standing on top of a suffering kneeling figure marked “Palestinians” - it shows that Soviet Jews were freed and supported at the expense of Palestinians; a cartoon captioned “Abraham and Isaac”: a huge bearded figure marked “Israel” is clubbing a child holding a rock; the large figure is saying, “Stop me before I kill again!” (Here Conrad is not only offensive – he is just plain wrong. Abraham did not kill Isaac!); Christ on a donkey accompanied by people with palm fronds is trying to enter Jerusalem and is stopped by armed Israeli soldiers, saying, “Jerusalem is a closed military area!”; Jesus rebuking a crying Moses, “Well, Moses, so much for our Judeo-Christian ethic”; Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley who was criticized by Jews for not denouncing anti-Semitic remarks by Farakhan is shown in Christ-like robes, a crown of thorns on his head and is captioned, “…and the chief priests and politicians shouted, ‘crucify him!’” (Quote from the Gospels on the crucifixion of Jesus) and more, much more.
So what do you say? Should we go and set fire to the Times building? Should we shoot the people who bring the Times to our homes? Should we threaten the Times editor with beheading? After all, this is what induced the Times and all the rest of the brave defenders of press freedom not to publish offensive cartoons, so it seems to work, right?
I think not. I will not sink to the level of the rioting barbarians. Much that the Times advocates and publishes offends me but I recognize its right to do so. But, I am also determined to expose hypocrisy and immorality when I see it.
And this is what this story is about.
As Attitudes Harden: US prepares military blitz against Iran's nuclear sites

As attitudes toward Islamic countries begin to harden in Europe over the cartoon riots, today marks the day of the first detailed major press reports of US preparations for a massive air strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. Until now, such reports were a matter of internet chatter on the blogs; now the reports have graduated to a number of mainstream papers, particularly out of the UK. Let us all hope that, indeed, the United States Central Command is preparing for such a scenario. Let us also hope that it won’t be necessary. Unfortunately and predictably, Iran seems to be backing the civilized world into a corner in which action will be the only viable alternative to the unthinkable – an Iranian bomb hanging over our heads.

Identifying the Enemy

For our good friends on the Left and our good friends on the Paleo-Right; for all those who are still having trouble identifying who the enemy is in this global struggle for the future. Please take a good look at the images below. They were not taken in some far away, unknown land; they were taken in downtown London, blocks from the cradle of Parliamentary-Democracy. Read the signs carefully, look at the faces. The images will tell the story. This is not some one-time, isolated Phenomenon or some tiny whako minority. This is a dymanic culture that is comfortable enough to assert itself in the heart of the West. Each photo truly is worth a thousand words. Tom Gross: Drawing A Line Under Hypocrisy In The Cartoon War!
Typical Cartoon on Display in the Arab Press on almost a Daily Basis
By TOM GROSS:
There is a strong case for saying that the Danish cartoons of Muhammad, which have caused so much uproar, are fair comment. Certainly those who haven't seen them can rest assured that they are relatively tame in comparison with many cartoons on other subjects which regularly appear in the European press. Even so, non-Muslims might have more sympathy with Muslims who find them offensive if it weren't for the astonishing double standards and hypocrisy of the Muslim world when it comes to accepting and applauding truly vicious slanders against Jews and, to a lesser extent, Christians.
The arguments from Muslims - though not the fanatical, violent manner of many of their protests - would no doubt be taken more seriously if they had also objected to the depiction on Syrian television of rabbis as cannibals. Or if, last Saturday, Britain's Muslim Weekly had not published a caricature of a hooked-nosed Ehud Olmert.
Or if, last Friday, Valley of the Wolves, the most expensive movie ever made in Turkey, had not opened to great local acclaim. In the film American soldiers in Iraq crash a wedding and pump a little boy full of lead in front of his mother. They kill dozens of innocent people with random machine-gunfire, shoot the groom in the head and drag those left alive to prison, where a Jewish doctor cuts out their organs and sells them to rich people in New York, London and Tel Aviv.
Or if a Belgian and Dutch Muslim group hadn't, last week, posted on its Web site pictures of Anne Frank in bed with Hitler. Or if the mere display of a cross or a Star of David in Saudi Arabia wasn't illegal.
And when it comes to newspaper cartoons - the subject of the present unrest - Muslim countries are world leaders in stirring up hate, without a peep of protest elsewhere, let alone the torching of buildings, threats to behead European tourists, and the burning of the Danish flag (which incidentally bears a Christian symbol, the cross). So much for religious respect.
THE CARTOONS published last September in Jyllands Posten, a paper hardly anyone outside Denmark, one of Europe's smallest countries, had ever heard of, are mild when compared to cartoons routinely produced about Jews in the countries where some of the worst anti-Danish protests are now being staged.
Arabic Jew-baiting is not - as Israel's enemies in the West often try to argue - limited to political attacks on Zionism. They are directed against Jews in general and are as loathsome and dehumanizing as those produced under the Nazis.
We might expect such demonic images from a country led by a Holocaust-denier, like Iran, or a rogue regime such as Syria. But these vile images are to be found in the media of supposedly moderate, pro-Western states such as Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Egypt.
Al-Watan (Oman) has run Nazi-type caricatures of Jews with hooked noses and hunched backs, not wearing shoes, and sweating profusely.
Akhbar Al-Khalij (Bahrain) has shown anti-Semitic caricatures of black-hatted Jews spitting and sweating as they manipulate America to do their bidding.
Al Ahram, one of Egypt's leading dailies, has published cartoons of Jews laughing while they drink blood. (The US Senate has approved a $1.84 billion aid package for Egypt for 2006, the second highest in the world.)
The official cartoonist of the Palestinian Authority has portrayed Jews in the form of snakes, a historic motif of medieval European anti-Semitism. The PA Web site has posted cartoons repeating the ancient blood libel that Jews murder non-Jewish children.
SOME OF the cartoons don't just resemble those published by the Nazis: They are literally copied from Nazi originals. For instance, a cartoon from Arab News (an English-language Saudi daily regarded as one of the more moderate publications in the Arab world), depicts rats wearing Stars of David and skullcaps scurrying backwards and forwards through holes in the wall of a building called "Palestine House." The imagery used is almost identical to a well-known scene from the Nazi film Jew Suess - a scene in which Jews are depicted as vermin to be eradicated by mass extermination.
At other times the Jews are the Nazis. The Jordanian newspaper Ad-Dustur, for example, ran a cartoon showing the railroad to the death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau - but with Israeli flags replacing the Nazi ones, and a sign which read "The Israeli Annihilation Camp." Jordan is supposedly a moderate country at peace with Israel.
To mark the UN designation of January 27 as Holocaust Memorial Day, the cartoonist for Al-Yawm (Saudi Arabia) superimposed the Nazi swastika on the Star of David.
Nor is Judaism spared. The Daily Star in Beirut ran a cartoon showing a large Talmud with a bayonet sticking out of it shooting an elderly man in Arab headdress, who then has red blood gushing out of him. Other Arab cartoons have shown Jews with money bags spreading death, terror and disease.
THE RELATIVELY mild Danish cartoons have been republished in several European papers so readers can discover what all the fuss is about. (It is hard for readers to judge the story without seeing them.) But not in papers in Britain, or in any major publications in the US, countries that are now apparently too intimidated to run the risks that might go with reproducing them.
At the same time, whereas editors from both the Guardian and Independent in London, for example, have appeared on the BBC saying they wouldn't dream of publishing cartoons that Muslims find offensive, these papers have not hesitated to publish cartoons offensive to Jews (Arab blood being smeared on the Western Wall in The Guardian, the flesh of Palestinian babies being eaten by Ariel Sharon in The Independent, and so on).
The New York Times rushed to praise a frivolous Broadway play showing Jesus having gay sex with Judas, yet hasn't dared to reproduce a Danish cartoon making a serious point about the misuse of the teachings of the prophet Muhammad by Islamist terrorists.
With demonstrators on the streets of London last Friday chanting in unison: "Europe, you will pay, your 9/11 is on its way" and holding signs reading "Behead those who insult Islam" and "Prepare for the REAL Holocaust," it is perhaps not surprising that weak spirits in the West are cowed.
Yet this is an issue that goes far beyond cartoons, and if they want Western freedoms to survive, moderate Muslims and non-Muslims alike have to stop caving into threats. On Sunday, Mark Steyn reminded us of the best-known words of a famous fictional Dane: "To be or not to be, that is the question."Exactly.
Now, after haveing read the above, and seen the unrestrained hate expressed on an ongoing, day to day basis in the Arab world, where even children are encouraged to participate in the hate: please review the rather mild Danish cartoons below and decide for yourself wheather you think the violance and riots are justified or anywhere near being in proportion to the "offence."
