Justin Web has a good article today in the Guardian of all places, that analyzes the roots of European anti-Americanisim. I have my own take on the issue which is:

Why is it that in almost every poll, when Europeans are asked if there is anywhere on Earth they would want to live, where that would be? A majority always choose someplace other than Europe. On the other hand, when Americans are asked the same question, the vast majority always say "America."

Could it possibly be resentment? Jealousy? A need to justify in their minds why they or their ancestors did not make that leap, and move away from Europe (mostly to America) as so many did, and prospered as a result in comparison to those who stayed behind? And to add insult to injury, these former lowly, poor Europeans that fled Europe then came back as loud and brash "Americans" to save their skin in two World Wars... and then paid for their reconstruction! It's enough to drive anyone insane with resentment.

I would also argue that anti-Americanism is a strange form of old fashion Anti-Semitism: Resentment of perceived power and success by folks who are annoyingly brash about it, conspiring to "control the world"...etc... I truly feel sorry for those Europeans who wallow in the "anti-American" mindset. Thank goodness there are still a few Europeans who have a shred of real (not false) self pride and confidence and can't be bothered with that kind of unproductive loathing.

In an interesting piece on the Washington Post this morning, Liz Cheney, the daughter of the Vice President, slammed Speaker Nancy Pelosi on her recent visit to Syria:

Anyone familiar with the past two years of Lebanese politics would never claim, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did in Damascus last week, that "the road to Damascus is a road to peace." Her assertion must have seemed especially naive to the people of Lebanon, where the list of the slain reads like a "Who's Who" of Syria's most vocal and effective opponents.

After Pierre Gemayel's assassination, I received an e-mail from a Lebanese member of parliament. "It is so awful," he wrote. "Pierre was such a promising young man, and he was afraid of nothing. They will try to kill all of us in the end, but we will keep fighting. We will never surrender."

Conducting diplomacy with the regime in Damascus while they kill Lebanese democrats is not only irresponsible, it is shameful.

Israeli Ambassador Gillerman goes on The Daily Show

British writer John Oliver, the show's diplomatic correspondent, presented Israel as the "Big Falafel" and asked Gillerman about "a nasty conspiracy theory going around which says that your country is being run by Jews." Gillerman proudly confirmed.

Not letting up, Oliver asked: "Let's say I have a friend who's ambassador of a state called Fisrael, and he's having a bit of trouble with an enemy in Iroon - should he use his nuclear weapons against Iroon?"

The Upside of the "Global Warming" Swindle

I highly encourage folks to read George Will's great article at Real Clear Politics today. Readers of this site know how I view "global warming"; they might get a clue from the fact that the term is almost always in quotation marks. But in fairness to the naive souls who have bought in to this religious cult and worship at the feet of its high priest: his holiness, the reverend Al Gore Jr., there is an upside to all the self-induced hysteria. If the result of this movement is the rapid move away from the use of fossil fuels to alternative technologies that will free us from our dependency on Arab Oil, than all of this "global warming" nonsense will have been worth it. Without today's demand for oil, radical Islam will be forced to crawl back under the stone from which it has appeared with the help of Saudi petrol dollars. Arab states whose economies are worthless without oil will be more inclined to sue for peace, and perhaps seek enlightenment as a means of lifting themselves up from their sorry 12th century state. So perhaps there is a common interest that could be emphasized...perhaps that is the angle that "global warming" worshipers can appeal to the rest of us who refuse to adopt their religious dogma....that George Will so effectively dismantles in his latest piece.

Professor Richard S. Lindzen of MIT: "Global Warming" Over Hyped

In this powerful article in Newsweek Magazine by Dr. Richard Lindzen of MIT, the hysteria of the religion of "global Warming" is ridiculed. It's interesting that below the article, Newsweek felt compelled to write the following description of this highly respected Meteorologist:

Lindzen is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research has always been funded exclusively by the U.S. government. He receives no funding from any energy companies.

How many academics who write an article for a main-stream publication feel compelled to mention the source of the funding of their research as part of their credentials. It's just one more small piece of evidence of the fear that scientists who dismiss the whole "global warming" hysteria feel. Other academics have actually received death threats for failing to fall in line with the orthodoxy. We salute Professor Richard Lindzen of MIT; a few samples from his article in Newsweek:

Recently many people have said that the earth is facing a crisis requiring urgent action. This statement has nothing to do with science. There is no compelling evidence that the warming trend we've seen will amount to anything close to catastrophe.

The earth is always warming or cooling by as much as a few tenths of a degree a year; periods of constant average temperatures are rare. Looking back on the earth's climate history, it's apparent that there's no such thing as an optimal temperature-a climate at which everything is just right. The current alarm rests on the false assumption not only that we live in a perfect world, temperaturewise, but also that our warming forecasts for the year 2040 are somehow more reliable than the weatherman's forecast for next week. Many of the most alarming studies rely on long-range predictions using inherently untrustworthy climate models, similar to those that cannot accurately forecast the weather a week from now.

The conclusion of the late climate scientist Roger Revelle-Al Gore's supposed mentor-is worth pondering: the evidence for global warming thus far doesn't warrant any action unless it is justifiable on grounds that have nothing to do with climate.

With widespread talk of the Logan Act and 3 years in jail, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is suddenly backing down from her Syrian "peace" initiative... faster than you can say words "independent council": "Our message was President Bush's message," she now says with the smirk wiped off of her face, "there is no division between the president and the Congress" when it come to Syria. Wow! That was quick.

I did not think of this angle but it seems to have a serious foundation:

The Logan Act makes it a felony and provides for a prison sentence of up to three years for any American, "without authority of the United States," to communicate with a foreign government in an effort to influence that government's behavior on any "disputes or controversies with the United States." Some background on this statute helps to understand why Ms. Pelosi may be in serious trouble.

Ms. Pelosi's trip was not authorized, and Syria is one of the world's leading sponsors of international terrorism. It has almost certainly been involved in numerous attacks that have claimed the lives of American military personnel from Beirut to Baghdad. The U.S. is in the midst of two wars authorized by Congress. For Ms. Pelosi to flaunt the Constitution in these circumstances is not only shortsighted; it may well be a felony, as the Logan Act has been part of our criminal law for more than two centuries. Perhaps it is time to enforce the law.

The Case of the British Sailors Vs. the Case of John McCain

I'm not alwasy a big fan of John McCain's politics, but no one can ever question his conduct when the moment of truth arrived:

On October 26, 1967, McCain's A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile, landing in Truc Bach Lake. He broke both arms and a leg after ejecting from his plane. After he regained consciousness, a mob gathered around him, spat on him, kicked him and stripped him of his clothing. He was then tortured by Vietnamese soldiers, who bayoneted him in his left foot and groin. His shoulder was crushed by a rifle butt. He was then transported to the Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Hanoi Hilton. Once McCain arrived at the Hanoi Hilton, he was placed in a cell and interrogated daily. When McCain refused to provide any information to his captors, he was beaten until he lost consciousness.

When the North Vietnamese discovered his father was the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command, (CINCPAC), commander of all U.S. forces in Vietnam, he was offered a chance to return home. McCain turned down the offer of repatriation. McCain signed an anti-American propaganda message which was written in Vietnamese, but only as a result of rigorous and brutal torture methods, which to this day have left him incapable of raising his arms above his head. According to McCain, signing the propaganda message is something he most regrets during his time as a POW. After McCain signed the statement, the Vietnamese decided they could not use it. They tried to force him to sign a second statement, and this time he refused. He received two to three beatings per week because of his continued refusal.

McCain was held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five-and-a-half years, mostly in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, and was finally released from captivity in 1973, having been a POW for almost an extra five years due to his earlier refusal to accept an out of turn repatriation offer.

Now let us fast forward to the conduct of the British sailors captured by Iran. They surrendered with no resistance...without a shot being fired. Were not tortured, abused or beaten. The Iranians apparently played a few mind games with them and in just about 24 hours, a few of them had already broken down, calling for the withdrawal of British forces from Iraq, "confessing" to violating Iranian territorial waters. Issuing televised public apologies, and trashing their own country. Ultimately, they were "pardoned" given new suits and goodies bags, and sent on their way after having served out their usefulness as propaganda tools for the rouge Iranian regime.

Of course, not everyone can be John McCain, and I grant that it can be unseemly to criticize others in a difficult situation, or to be kicking others when they are down. But honesty is the best road to recovery: would it be too much to expect some kind of middle ground between abject humiliation and surrender, and McCain-type heroism in these types of situations?

Sultan Knish Makes a powerful and true point that I failed to observe in an earlier posting. And I am absolutely certain that Speaker Pelosi also failed to recognize as she was led on her Damascus "useful idiot" sightseeing tour. Truly, a remarkable symbol of western naivete; Sultan Knish explains it best:

The double irony of this photo is not merely Nancy Pelosi, who had billed herself as the most powerful woman in America, subjugating herself for entry into the Umayyad Mosque. What Nancy Pelosi is doing is looking at the supposed head of John the Baptist, a looted Christian artifact, displayed in a Muslim mosque. That isn't a notion that would ever enter Pelosi's head, but it's certainly one that's apparent to any Muslim who views the spectacle of one of the political leaders of a Christian country smiling and nodding along at the theft of one of her religion's holiest relics.

The Umayyad or Omayyad mosque is built over the ruins of a Christian Church dedicated to John the Baptist that was torn down by Muslims and replaced with a mosque. Western world smile and tour the grounds with no clue that they're nodding along to the destruction of their own heritage and humiliation of their own religion. In one visit Pelosi had managed to acquiesce not only to the degradation of her own gender and country, but also her religion. A true triple score.

Even the notoriously squishy Europeans are getting the picture: Slow on the uptake, with no moral compass to speak of, brainwashed from birth to be passive and obedient to the multi-cultural/Socialist ideal, from cradle to grave; But still a slight majority of them get it.

A slim majority of Europeans would back attacks on Iran as a last resort to stop it acquiring a nuclear bomb, according to a poll released on Wednesday. Asked to comment on the statement "we must stop countries like Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, even if that means taking military action", 52 percent said they agreed, with 40 percent against. A majority agreed with the statement in 18 EU states including France and Britain while a majority was against it in nine others, including Germany and Spain. Support was highest in Denmark (68 percent) and fell to 37 percent in Slovakia, the poll by France's TNS-Sofres showed.

As I mention in the comment section: I don't blame these soldiers, they only reflect the larger problem; I blame an entire mentality of Western surrender and weakness in the face of evil (especially in Europe). These soldiers were probably not even ordered to defend themselves if confronted. They probably had little or no training for captivity, and were certainly not instilled with a healthy dose of old-fashion self-pride and the kind of values that would help them resist, and shield them from even moderate pressure to trash their own country when the moment of truth arrived.


Somehow I suspect that these Marines below would not have been as accommodating to their captors:

The price paid for their release is still unclear but will undoubtedly become known down the road. Iran did announce that the British government had sent a letter to the Iranian Foreign Ministry "pledging that it (entering Iranian waters) will not happen again."

In another story related to humiliation, US Secretary of State...ah...I mean Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, rushed to Damascus to socialize with Syrian dictator Bashir Assad, despite requests from the US State Department that she avoid the meeting at this time. There was a time when politics ended at the waters edge...

Military Historian Ralph Peters delivers a hard hitting piece today in the New York Post. I have refrained from this kind of observation but as the issue drags out, honesty and candor become more and more difficult to repress:

Members of Britain's Royal Marines wimped out in a matter of days and acquiesced in propaganda broadcasts for their captors. Jingoism aside, I can't imagine any squad of U.S. Marines behaving in such a shabby, cowardly fashion. Our Marines would have fought to begin with. Taken captive by force, they would've resisted collaboration. To the last man and woman. You could put a U.S. Marine in a dungeon and knock out his teeth, but you wouldn't knock out his pride in his country and the Corps. "Semper fi" means something.

The Iranians judged their victims well: The British boat crews didn't make even a token effort at defending themselves. Now their boo-hoo-we-quit government isn't defending them, either. We allowed the Iranian hardliners to humiliate a once-great military and encourage hostage-takers everywhere. John Bull has been cowed by a pack of unshaven thugs. And the Britannia that ruled the waves is waving goodbye.

This article in today's Daily Mail is simply sickening!

Schools are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, a Government backed study has revealed. It found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial. There is also resistance to tackling the 11th century Crusades - where Christians fought Muslim armies for control of Jerusalem - because lessons often contradict what is taught in local mosques.

What's next? dropping that old and outdated "the Earth is round" theory? You simply cannot make this stuff up. Just when you think rock bottom has been hit, a new day brings a new low. What kind of people exactly is the UK education system going to produce? Perhaps people who are taught to see "both sides" of the holocaust.
