Via the always titillating Sondra Kay: The lefty-gay Hillbuzz blog is coming clean on Bush. Finally acknowledging that although imperfect like all of us, he is a good and decent man. The trigger was George and Laura's quiet visit to Fort Hood immediately following the terrorist attack, but the reversal is sweeping:
You may be as surprised by this as we are ourselves, but from this day forward George W. and Laura Bush are now on the same list for us as the Clintons, Geraldine Ferraro, Stephanie Tubbs Jones, and the other political figures we keep in our hearts and never allow anyone to badmouth.Read the entire thing. Read the comments. I was absolutely floored and moved. These guys clearly have integrity.
Criticize their policies academically and intelligently and discuss the Bush presidency in historical and political terms…but you mess with the Bushes personally and, from this day forward, you’ll answer to us.
We hope someday to be able to thank George W. and Laura in person for all they’ve done, and continue to do. They didn’t have to head to Ft. Hood. That was not their responsibility.
The Obamas should have done that.
Something else about Bush merits respect and admiration. I can't recall within my lifetime a new president dwelling at such length and and so nastily about his predecessor as Obama has done. To my knowledge Bush has not only not answered in kind but he has kept quiet about it although he could hardly be blamed for defending himself.
ReplyDeleteThen again, except possibly for Harding modest men do not become president, but this one's self-regard seems excessive. His special gift to the queen was an iPod--available on any British High Street--filled with his own speeches. This is hubris, out and out.
