Bloomberg is reporting that on April 16. Obama was received at Mexico’s anthropology museum in Mexico City by Felipe Solis, a distinguished archaeologist. The following day, Felipe Solis died of flu-like symptoms. President Obama is not displaying any symptoms but the coincidence is chilling.
Mexico seems to be taking every possible responsible step to try to contain this, including declaring a national emergency, closing schools and all public events. For that they deserve to be commended. The same cannot be said about US actions: Why is the US border with Mexico still open? Why are passengers coming in on flights from Mexico not screened for the virus? Why has the Obama administration failed to take a single preemptive action and is reacting to events rather than being preemptive? Wouldn't prudence dictate that the border be closed until the situation is clarified? Or do we wait until the pandemic spreads and then take that action after it's too late? Every case in the US and around the world is traced back to Mexico so far. Why wait? What exact number of infections in the US will justify closing the border? 100? 1,000? 100,000? 1,000,000? It's hard to take the warning seriously when the most basic steps like closing the border are not being taken at this early stage. Should this thing spread throughout the US via Mexico, people will look back on this moment and remember that the US could have taken preemptive action when only a dozen infections have been detected in the US, and chose not to act.
