Crowds whipped into a frenzy of religious ecstasy are drawn by powers beyond their control to touch the new Messiah.

Actually, now that I think about it, even Jesus Christ himself did not go this far:

Now I know how Hitler came to power (and no I am not asserting that Obama is a tyrant...yet). A slick-talking politician can make the most outlandish claim in a speech to a nationwide audience, and the press will fawn over it uncritically. It matters not what he says, but how he said it...with an adoring crowd, mind-numbingly chanting "YES WE CAN" (the "Sieg Heil" of our times) in the background. A cult of personality has clearly griped a large segment of this country. Hopefully, our constitution will shield us from the potential danger inherent in this type of politics.
