The Holy Church of Global Warming

Michael Barone hits the nail on the head with his piece today in Real Clear Politics. There is an element of malignant narcissism in those who worship at the alter of "global warming," as if history began yesterday and it's all about us. The Earth is a dynamic place, constantly changing, always has been, always will be. Forces well beyond our control are always at work: glaciers, forests and deserts expand and recede with fluctuations in temperatures; continents shift and sea levels change over millions of years; sudden catastrophic events have occurred many times; the intensity of energy from our sun fluctuates; asteroids and comets have collided with our planet numerous times; sudden mass extinctions have occurred multiple times (in fact 99% of all living creatures that have roamed the earth since the beginning of time are now extinct with no relation to human activity). Yet many people have a need to convince themselves that it's all about us and that we can control everything. In their strange narcissistic world, we are like gods; our bad behavior and policy does not only dictate the actions of Islamic radicals who crash airplanes into our buildings, it dictates the very climate of the entire planet. And there is this immature notion that the temperature and weather that we grew up in is the ideal permanent climate because that's all we know. The average human (even Al Gore) will roam the earth only about 700,000 hours, that's it. Not even enough time to register as a blink of an eye compared to the long history of our planet, solar system and universe. Yet we are to ignore millions of years of history and join the Al Gore "the-earth-is-coming-to-an-end-because-humans-have-misbehaved-over-the-past-100-years" cult? I'll take my chances with my SUV.

"Read the history of the 1930s: fascism, communism, world war. There are worse things than a rise of 1 or 2 degrees Centigrade.

The natural human yearning for spirituality has produced in many people educated in secular-minded universities and enveloped in an atmosphere of contempt for traditional religion a faith that we vulgar human beings have a sacred obligation not to inflict damage on Mother Earth. But science tells us that the Earth and its climate have been constantly changing.

Gore and his followers seem to assume that the ideal climate was the one they got used to when they were growing up. When temperatures dropped in the 1970s, there were warnings of an impending ice age. When they rose in the 1990s, there were predictions of disastrous global warming. This is just another example of the solipsism of the baby boom generation, the pampered and much-praised age cohort that believes the world revolves around them and that all past history has become irrelevant.

We're told in effect that the climate of the late 1950s and early 1960s was, of all those that have ever existed, the best of all possible climates. Not by science. But as a matter of faith."
